Join our efforts in preserving ancestral knowledge and cultural identity
In many indigenous communities, ancestral knowledge and cultural identities are weakening as more people transition to a “modern” lifestyle. Traditionally, wisdom was passed on by the “yachacheq” of the community, custodians and transmitters of cultural and historical wisdom. As younger generations increasingly migrate to cities, many elderly individuals in rural communities face abandonment and are often viewed as burdens. This shift leads to a profound loss, as their rich wisdom and experience, once integral to community life, are now overlooked in favor of modern values. Two of the communities we have worked with are Ccatcca and others located in the mountains of Eastern Cusco. With the local municipality, we identified yachacheq with skills in medicinal plants, textiles, music, natural construction, and farming techniques. These elders teach for up to 6 months in collaboration with local schools — all in Quechua.
